The origin of swear words

I’m not very well coordinated when I first get out of bed and this morning I ripped my toe nail back when I accidentally brushed my foot past darling hubbies work case. Ouch!!!!!! Anyway, for obvious reasons, it got me thinking about swear words and their origins. I personally don’t like swear words much especially the F and C words and I have to be REALLY angry or upset before I say any swear word really with the exception of “bloody” which us Aussies tend to use frequently and don’t even really see it as a swear anymore.

So I did a quick bit of research and found the F word has a variety of origins depending on where you look including the possible German origin, the English sexual origin and there were some other, rather interesting, ideas about its origins too including an African tribal origin!

“Crap” is named after Thomas Crapper who invented the toilet while 'cock-up' is actually from a beer making background. If the batch didn’t go well and went bad, they would turn the cock (i.e. tap) up to drain the barrel. “Shit” means the obvious excrement and is Anglo Saxon in origin and “piss” is either Latin or French for urination.

I also found this frequency of swearing chart interesting: http://books.elliottback.com/bbc-swear-word-frequency-charts/

Fascinating eh?!
