Did You Brush Your Teeth Today? (by Harry McAlister)

This week's InfoCircle is again a contribution by one of our very talented senior students, Harry. Harry has written for InfoCircle a few times and judging by the resultant comments, his thoughts are very popular!

Did you brush your teeth today? I hope so for the sake of those around you! It keeps your breath tolerable, helps prevent bacterial build-ups that can hurt your body, and of course helps prevent cavities. Have you talked to your Gods today? I hope so for your sake. Some of us at one point or another have dabbled in Christianity. At one point or another you have run into it, wanting to or not. Since it is something most are familiar with I am going to propose an analogy.

Do you as a pilgrim to Wicca have the spirituality of the average Christian? I think if you talk to them a lot you have probably discerned that like us there are two types of Christians. Those that are spiritual and those that go to church. I have met many Christians that go to church. Put them in a burning building and they will run like the dickens for the first exit and seldom look back. I have met few spiritual Christians. But if you put them in a burning building, likely they will do two things before running out themselves. They will endeavour to make sure everyone else got out and they will likely pray. They will pray for their own salvation, for that of others, and because touching base with God in all things is just something they do.

I have noticed as a newbie to Wicca that few people will talk to you about talking to your Gods. They will tell you about circles, about sacred spaces, about the season of the year and how they will do offering to their Gods. But praying seems to be a mystery that few people want to talk about or acknowledge. I think that is in large part because if you just pray to your favourite God, you circumvent the sacred space ritual, circle casting that makes Wicca unique in that we join directly with our Gods.......whew!!That was a mouthful.

I have had more than my share of ‘oh crap’ moments where I have fallen from a great height, car and motorcycle accidents, had a gun or two pointed my way, my daughter really really sick in the hospital. I very quickly in all those moments called on my God or Gods after conversion. I have also had a quiet moment sitting on a mountainside watching a thunderstorm in all its fury being blasted by a setting sun, lighting up the sky with lightening and colours that set the sky on fire with reds, violets, and yellows. In that moment from my perch I just talked to them and said my thanks for letting me watch the show, and said, "Wow you guys can really cook!"

Now don't get me wrong, I firmly respect my Gods, and know in a heartbeat that life on this rock could end in a millisecond at their hands. I also delivered my kids into this world and know a miracle when I see it. I am not saying invite them out for drinks and cocktail sausages. But if you can't just occasionally ask advice or say thanks or yell for help in an ‘oh crap’ moment what's the point?

Be a good witch, learn to visualize, follow the Rede, cast your circles because the difference in a circle is profound, do good things, and pray. Let the Gods know you love them, thank them for that warm sun or cool breeze, ask before you do something stupid, sometimes they will let you know, smile at the moon, and laugh with the sunshine. And brush your teeth.
