How Valid are Internet versus Face to Face Covens?

This is a volatile yet very important question for people looking for companionship and teaching from reliable sources. As the leader of both the face to face and the online Oak and Mistletoe covens, I have to say that the face to face companionship and learning will always be the preferred method. Having someone sit beside you, work physically with you and even to have a cuppa and chat with you is always more beneficial than a distant relationship. But it’s not always that easy.

Many people simply don’t have access to a geographically local coven to learn with and so an online coven is the next best option. Some people may find a local coven or two but may not feel comfortable with them. Always trust your instincts! If you don’t feel comfortable or some niggling doubt lingers, then trust it and stay away.

Some folks may have access to local covens but may deliberately decided not to work with them because of work commitments, for medical reasons or simply because they’re shy. All of these are legitimate reasons for learning via an online group. But do your homework first. Ask questions, be careful. The internet can be a wonderful learning and social venue but it can also be a place fraught with dangers.

Online covens need to be at least as welcoming as face to face covens and probably more so. A warm and genuine welcome can help alleviate any fear and suspicion that a newcomer may feel. Is the coven leadership approachable? Are the discussions taking place respectful and open?  Are you expected to pay money to some unknown source for something you can’t try and test first? Are the principles and aims of the coven clearly visible? Do people stick to them? Are there any recommendations or warnings about the group anywhere else that you can track and use to make a decision?

Online covens can be safe, nurturing, productive and healthy as well as fun and educational but do your research first and never commit to anything until you’ve ahd an opportunity to test it out first.

Smiles and blessings,

Amethyst

online a good thing!

I wonder how the folks who dislike the online covens feel about the unrestricted and unrestrained use of magick by people who just do what they can because no one will take them in.  You have given home and schooling to many of us who had no home and would have done something stupid without you.
