FULL MOON 9th JAN
The time of the full moon is traditionally a time for working magic within the various esoteric and wiccan traditions. The first full moon after Litha will be in the morning of the 9th of January. This full moon will bring with it a unique energy vibration that makes it an ideal time to assist in releasing internal conflict, especially tensions that arise from relationships and low self esteem and anger. For those who will be participating in the pathworking of Isis with me in SL we will work with this energy to introduce a new energy vortex into your aura to promote internal unity and connection with the Great Goddess.
Every full moon has its own individual energy signature that is unique. It is this energy or vibration that practitioners use to empower their spell and ritual work during this time. Having an awareness of what particular energy the Universe is offering at these times allows one to make especially effective use of the power that is available at these times.
With the moon in the sign of the crab, its natural home, the power of the moon is essentially supercharged at this time. Each of the star signs has a planetary ruler, for the sign of Cancer this is the moon. With the moon residing in its natural realm this makes this particular full moon a powerful one. This can have both positive and negative consequences. What makes this full moon a rather special one is the alignment of the moon with the Sun and Pluto.
For during this full moon the Moon will be in direct opposition to both the Sun and Pluto who will be travelling through the Earth sign of Capricorn. This will create a ‘tension’ between the moon and these two bodies both on a macrocosmic level and also within our own psychology.
The Sun is often seen as the self conscious, masculine, visible aspect of our consciousness while the moon is the feminine, subconscious, hidden aspect of our being. It should not be hard to discern what effects might be felt during a full moon where our emotional and astral energies are supercharged yet where our moon coincides with an opposition to the Sun. Yet this tension, this conflict between the outer and inner selves is further amplified by the moon’s opposition to Pluto. Pluto is the overlord of Hades, the underworld. He is both subtle and powerful. Pluto is often seen as a higher frequency of Mars, and like its militant counterpart will push and use anger and dissatisfaction to promote change in order to establish harmony within one’s life. Don’t be surprised if this full moon brings up many emotions – not all pleasant.
Yet at the same time that these planetary tensions are bringing internal conflict and problems to the fore, the moon’s energies are being stabilised and strengthened by its position in Cancer and the influence of Aquarius rising on the horizon as the moon reaches its zenith. This will create a foundation of safety and comfort that allows this Full Moon time to be utilised to great effect.
This creates an atmosphere where disharmony between who we are in the world and who we want to be can be effectively looked at without becoming overwhelmed. All of us carry a variety of conflicts and complexes that we keep safely hidden from the world and indeed from ourselves by pushing them down into our own individual ‘underworlds’. At this time the practical, ambitious, hard working Solar energy of the Capricorn Sun is flooding our personality and allowing us access into these Plutonian depths. The lens through which this observation occurs is the brilliant full moon snug in its natural realm of Cancer. The Cancerian Moon will impart a sense of emotional security and a desire to give comfort, love and acceptance to both ourselves and the world. The key words for this time are awareness and acceptance and forgiveness. People who are sensitive to the cosmos will certainly become aware of feelings of self doubt and aspects of ourselves that bring us discomfort or pain. Active practitioners at this time will take that awareness and use the galactic ‘tensions’ to promote healing and harmony both within and without. This is also a most excellent time for initiation, which will be the focus of the pathworking in SL.
This is a wonderful time for healing conflict between our beliefs and our actions and especially deep seated resentments. Some suggestions for suitable workings at this time:
- Spend some time re-connecting with your inner sense of Divinity/Source. This is the part of yourself that is beyond emotional pain, ever forgiving, ever alive, ever connected to the Light. Once you feel empowered in this energy write out a list of aspects of your personality or your behaviour that you would like changed. Working from this expanded sense of consciousness send forgiveness and understanding to these aspects of yourself. Really feel yourself expand into the being of LIGHT you desire to become.
- Take a magical bath. Research either on the net or from decent texts, such as anything by Scott Cunningham, and draw up a mixture of both lunar and solar herbs. Combine them in the ritual bath as you meditate on the different lunar and solar aspects of your consciousness coming into alignment. Once you have felt this take effect meditate on your soul/higher self irradiating your body and aura with complete and unconditional love and appreciation. Feel the unbounding and endless goodness of Prime Source wrap you in a blanket of energy that is available to you AT ALL TIMES.
- Either cast the traditional Wiccan circle as taught in Amethyst’s lessons – or if you want to attempt a new approach and broaden your studies – then cast a specifically Astrological Circle *. Once the circle is cast have a lunar candle in the West and a Solar candle in the East. Light the Solar candle first and mediate and pray that your self-conscious, thinking, Solar aspects of your consciousness be purified and brought into alignment with the Divine. Then repeat with the Lunar candle. Ritual action taken on the physical has a profound effect on the subconscious, as such activities like these performed at this full moon will have a super-charged effect.
- Honestly look at those lunar aspects of yourself that you want to change, and then make a symbolic physical action to signify to the Universe that you a) intend to change and b) you desire assistance to change. I would strongly encourage people to read the current issue of Spell and Spirit and read the truly excellent article by Shadow-witch Enchanica on moon signs to assist in this endeavour. For example if you moon sign tends towards being overly insensitive then spend the day seeing yourself as a source of unending joyful energy and compliment everyone you encounter, without taking anyone’s reaction personally.
* The traditional circle is cast with the elements assigned to their specific quarters based on how the different elemental forces that lie behind what we term as “Air, and Fire, and Water and Earth” came into being. The Astrological circle which has been an important part of ritual magic work in the West for Millennia has a different method of assigning the elements to the different quarters. It is based on the movement of the Sun through the astrological signs. As such FIRE is assigned to the EAST, EARTH is assigned to the South, AIR is assigned to the WEST and finally WATER is assigned to the NORTH. This is because the Sun always moves through a FIRE sign first, before proceeding through an EARTH sign, then an AIR sign and finally through a WATER sign. This type of circle casting is a very useful tool to become accomplished in if you are planning on working astrological magic in the future. As mentioned it has been used for a very long time and as such is a part of the Universal Human Subconsciousness ( also known as the Akashic Records). By its use you are effectively informing your subconscious that the magic you are performing will be worked out within the astrological sphere, rather than the etheric field of ourselves and our planet.
As mentioned, the tension of this full moon creates an atmosphere where emotional complexes and barriers can either be overcome or succumbed to. The choice is yours. There is no right or wrong in our eternal journey to completeness. Yet if you want to let go of disharmony between your inner and outer selves and grow then this is an ideal time for reflection and honest self appraisal (be brave and ask your nearest and dearest to give their observations of any disconnections you exhibit – but make sure it is someone you trust and someone who has your best interest at heart). Then call on the power of the Moon Goddess and the Capricorn God to join in unison within you to strengthen your heart and open your consciousness. You only need to ask to receive – for all of us are at all times surrounded by the unending desire of the Cosmos to fill us with pleasure, growth, prosperity and peace.

for some strange reason the formatting of my article has created enormous gaps between the paragraths. I will never understand technology. *sigh*
I also forgot to add that this is a most excellent time to let go of the illusion that other people have harmed you. This may be a very difficult lesson for some people to hear, especially those who have been abused and who harbour hatred towards others. Making an altar offering is a useful working to perform. This involves creating a magical collection of items that can be burnt that truthfully represnt your resentment and hurt. It may be photos, letters or your own writings. Take this either to your altar or to a scared place in nature and burn it. As it transforms into pure firey energy see the negative energy within yourself dissolve. Then follow this will an energy sending towards the person. A good example taught to be my an early teacher in my studies is to say AND FEEL
"I forgive you
I forgive myself
I ask for your your forgiveness
I pray for your peace and prosperity
May there only be peace between us"
Then spend some time feeling the love of the Divine fill you and the person you are releasing from your life.

Hello David....
Hello David.... what a very lovely and beautifully written descriptive post! Obviously, you have given this a great deal of thought....
David "Every full moon has its own individual energy signature that is unique. It is this energy or vibration that practitioners use to empower their spell and ritual work during this time. Having an awareness of what particular energy the Universe is offering at these times allows one to make especially effective use of the power that is available at these times."
Quite right, practitioners within various disciplines over the millenia have indeed learned to harness these energies to advantage, but the effects of the full moon are felt by all, including animals, plants, aquatic and even microscopic life forms. My youngest son (who, like me, is also a Druid) became interested in trying to come up with an actual physical explanation or cause for this (a typical Virgo, if you get my meaning). Reproduced in its entirety here (including a humorous footnote) is what he wrote in another Forum concerning this most mysterious aspect of our moon's influence....
"For decades hospital emergency rooms and police departments have noticed a surge of activity around the time of the full moon, and mental institutions have also reported a rise in the number of patients that inexplicably become agitated around the same time. Even the word “lunacy” is derived from the Latin word for moon “Luna”, and ancient folklore, most notably about the werewolf, is also tied to the phases of the moon, particularly the full moon. It's interesting that people made this connection so far back, and that the connection has continued to be made right up to to the present day.
The only heavenly body in close proximity to the Earth which can verifiably be shown to be capable of affecting or influencing the human body physiologically in any way is the moon. It’s well known that the moon acts on the Earth gravitationally in creating the tides, and also that the human body, being composed largely of water is also affected by its gravitational pull. However, the quantity of water present in the human body is negligible to the point that no physiological effects can be seen or easily measured.
Since the gravitational pull of the moon is pretty much the same whether it’s full or not as it passes overhead and it has no significant magnetic field, its gravitational pull and magnetic field can reasonably be excluded from consideration as being a viable theory of the as yet unknown mechanism of operation that might explain the cyclic nature of the observed phenomena.
In trying to explain both the ancient folkloric beliefs and modern observations that something is happening, that leaves the light reflected by the moon as the only predictable cyclic influence available to explain it.
Is there possibly some peculiar quality about the altered spectrum of light reflected from the lunar surface that renders it capable of acting directly on the brain via the optic nerve, causing physiological/psychological changes in the brain? Is it possible that somehow this causes already unstable people to become even more unstable, making them more likely to exhibit aberrant behaviour? It’s just a theory....
Here’s the visible electromagnetic spectrum....
Here’s the altered visible electromagnetic spectrum after being reflected from the lunar surface during a full moon....
To reiterate, the main thrust of my little theory (even lacking any illustration) is that there’s something about the nature of the reflected light from the lunar surface that’s qualitatively unique in its ability to influence the mental state of those who are susceptible to it which leads to aberrant behavior.
In hindsight, I’m thinking that the inclusion of those images (solar visible spectrum and full moon reflected visible spectrum) may actually be misleading. Since the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is only a fraction of the whole, it’s as likely that the observed effects have to do with wavelengths not visible to the human eye as not. Of course, this is all just speculation borne of curiosity.... looking forward to your opinion."
On a lighter note, I've been conducting an experiment,
spending every available moment staring at the
full moon looking for any obvious visible effects,
but so far....
....there's no change in my appearance!

Wonderful, wonderful;
Dear One,
How magnificent to have a child interested in such things.I am sure he will add much to our accumulated knowledge!! Having worked as a specialist in both psychiatry and emergency medicine I can confirm that it is BOTH the NEW moon and the FULL moon that bring out pathology in people. In fact the only well designed study demonstrated that there was NO influence of the full moon but a clear influence of the NEW moon on psychiatric presentations.People keep perpetuating the false belief that the FULL moon causes disturbance without any scientific proof. Yet it is constantly quoted as a fact.
It makes perfect sense to me that the spectrum of LIGHT that is transmitted to our planet would have a profound effect, yet the gravitational force of the moon does have an effect. The moon may be in geo-stationary orbit of the planet yet because of its closeness it has quite a profound effect that differs on the earth's surface, depending on what part of our planet is closet and what part is further from the moon. The ability of scientists to predict the tides proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Furthermore, one needs to consider the divine "purpose" of the moon. This will differ depending on belief systems.
Yet, if one was to accept that the SUN is a representation of the Solar God, then the Moon becomes a reflection of this energy. As such the energy that the moon is reflecting to our planet goes beyond the visual spectrum into the spiritual spheres. How does one meassure the influence of a reflected Capricorn Sun to a Scorpio Sun to an Aries Sun??
Esoteric wisdom has indepth answers to these questions. Yet I would adore to hear what your, obviously talented son who has , perhaps reincarnational wisdom, has to say on the matter. I suspect he has "hit" on an aspect that has been unknown and is in need of research. Your marvelous post has certainly made me think. Please convey my gratitude and admiration to your son and encourage him to advance this theory further. I have a feeling he has discovered or re-discovered something something that we have been missing.
I always love and adore expanding my knowledge. So I send you much respect and love.

Dear One,
I cannot convey how happy that makes me feel (currently has a big smile on my face). I look forward to many conversations.

Here we go!
Hi David, happy to talk with you!
David "Having worked as a specialist in both psychiatry and emergency medicine I can confirm that it is BOTH the NEW moon and the FULL moon that bring out pathology in people."
Do you mean to tell me you're a liscensed Psychiatrist, an emergency room qualified Physician and a practicing Wiccan too? Thats amazing! It must have taken years. What schools did you attend (if you don't mind my asking)? I'm afraid my academic background is sorely lacking and not nearly so illustrious! I'm a Druid, an Artist, and I dropped out of school at the age of sixteen. This should be a really cool conversation!
David "In fact the only well designed study demonstrated that there was NO influence of the full moon...."
In my opinion the results of many of these studies seem skewed from the outset, in other words they test the responses of various seemingly random groups of people, but they don't seem to focus on assembling groups of people composed of those most obviously affected as test subjects, which might yield valuable data that would begin to help focus attention on those areas of the brain experiencing tangible physiological effects caused by exposing the eye to certain wavelenths of light. There is a reputable study (I will have to dig it up) that shows that the full moon actually does have a consistent and predictable observable effect on a substantial percentage of those afflicted with shizophrenia, which was the original impetus in this line of thinking about the light of the full moon, together with the well known fact that epilectic seizures can be induced by lights strobing at a particular frequency in those so afflicted.
David "....but a clear influence of the NEW moon on psychiatric presentations."
I tried to locate a study related to the new moon and how it might affect human behaviour but could't find anything, maybe I didn't use the right search terms, could you send me in the right direction with a link maybe?
David "It makes perfect sense to me that the spectrum of LIGHT that is transmitted to our planet would have a profound effect...."
That's what I thought too, particularly since the eye is actually an extension of the brain itself that is directly exposed to the environment, and can produce various physiological responses depending on the applied stimuli. Even if the data on schizophrenics is excluded, the veracity of the reported effects on epiletics is irrefutable and should be pursued (I'm sure the U.S. military is looking into it).
David "....yet the gravitational force of the moon does have an effect. The moon may be in geo-stationary orbit of the planet yet because of its closeness it has quite a profound effect that differs on the earth's surface, depending on what part of our planet is closet and what part is further from the moon."
It's impossible to disagree with that, the moon certainly has a proven effect on the oceans, and so does the sun, but it seems to be a matter of scale. The moons and the suns gravitaional force (considered weak by Physicists) acts over a vast surface area of the ocean in producing the tides, and I read that Physicists have compared the force exerted by the moon on a mass comparable to that of a human being on the surface of the Earth when it (the moon) is directly over head as being comparable to the gravitational force exerted by a pea placed on top of the head, which doesn't sound terribly impactful, but who knows? Also, it strikes me that if the human body was really that sensitive to subtle variations in the force of gravity over time, even a passing car might be expected to trigger a mood shift of some sort!
David "Furthermore, one needs to consider the divine "purpose" of the moon. This will differ depending on belief systems."
You have a gift for understatment.
David "Yet, if one was to accept that the SUN is a representation of the Solar God, then the Moon becomes a reflection of this energy. As such the energy that the moon is reflecting to our planet goes beyond the visual spectrum into the spiritual spheres. How does one meassure the influence of a reflected Capricorn Sun to a Scorpio Sun to an Aries Sun??"
Good point, and I just happen to have another little pet theory that follows this same line of reasoning, where, on a grander scale, gravity and light (or electromagnetic waves more accurately) acting in concert could be used, possibly, to explain the mechanism of operation behind astrological influences, but we can bang away at this for a while first.
Strength to you, Emile

David "Having worked as a specialist in both psychiatry and emergency medicine I can confirm that it is BOTH the NEW moon and the FULL moon that bring out pathology in people."
That makes a lot of sense really, kind of like an informal study similar to what I referred to earlier, and since you were frequently exposed to a group of people made up of those most obviously affected, you would be in a possition to develop a greater sensitivity to their responses and maybe even notice other effects as well, such as the influence of the new moon, which hasn't recieved much attention. Do you by any chance remember what pecentage of those you saw were schizophrenics?
Dear Aemilius, Firstly I
Dear Aemilius,
Firstly I must apologise because this is going to be a short response (I'm about to run out the door - but wanted to let you know I had read your posts)
Yes, guilty as charged I am a doctor and have completed training in psychiatry (the speciality I work in) but previously completed training in emergency medicine.
I will most definitely get the medical papers and the references to you on the effect of the full and the new moon. These were papers that ONLY looked at presentations retrospectively. So many comments could be made about the methodology and the validity of the results.
You have raised an interest in "schizophrenics". This is the main reason I wanted to make a quick comment before reflecting more on your post and writing you a longer and more indephth answer. I really, really want to stress first and foremost that I have no judgement about any term people use - but personally I do not like to use terms that label human beings with psychiatric diagnoses. This is a huge area deserving of much comment, and I would welcome your insights, but as a psychiatrist I never use the term (unless I am writing letters to other doctors - and even then I tend to try to use alternative language). People who undergo the experience that modern science terms as 'psychosis' are an enormous group of unique individuals with very different pathologies, personalities and symptoms. I know that I am probably sounding like a pompous arse but it is my belief that people who have elected prior to this present incanation to experience what medicine calls schizophrenia are some of the bravest and most courageous souls on this planet.
But to answer your question, people who find that their senses are more open and more receptive to the etheric and the astral will experience more "psychotic" phenomena. As such they are most definitely, in my experience, more open to the influence of the moon's energy (and other energies). Which makes it even more important for people with this 'condition' to learn excellent methods of shielding and protection. It is indeed a shame that people with this condition are ridiculed and stigmatised - when in fact they are often the vanguards of recieving new energy and information that the "normal" human group soul representation is reluctant to process.
Thank you so much for your response. I am sorry that I don't have the time today to post a more comprehensive response. But to summarise:
People who experience more of the spectrum of energy then the normal human being - some of which are called channelers and others are called schizophrenics - are in my experience more sensitive to the influence of the full and new moon and the planets. The impact of this influence is varied. The most common complaint I hear is that people have difficulty sleeping during a full moon and feel unusually energised. Yet one does need to keep in mind that what patients report to their doctors is often editted to appear 'normal' and many patients will not elaborate or detail their true spiritual experiences out of fear of being labelled or diagnosed and the consequences that may follow.
Just wanted to make contact and thank you for your response and will most definitely post a more detailed answer, or if you wish send it to you as a PM, about my experiences and thoughts about schizophrenia and wicca.
In Love
David
Hi David!
Hi David!

That would be great.... but there's no hurry.

Yes, I see your point and completely agree. I will try to couch any future references to the condition in subtler terms. My use of the word was not meant to be denegrating in any way though.
David "But to answer your question, people who find that their senses are more open and more receptive to the etheric and the astral will experience more "psychotic" phenomena. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Right, and well put. I think you'll find me to be extraordinarily sympathetic with that outlook, because, as it turns out, I happen to have my own unique little window into both of the worlds you mentioned. You see, for about the last twenty years now I've been taking care of my mom (Guenn Eona Nimue), who was a "chaneller" for about forty years, and also keeping an eye on my eldest brother (Kevin) who, when he moved in, was so affected by this "condition" he had become severely dysfunctional, unable or unwilling to speak for days at a time, punctuated by spontaneous outbursts of yelling at all times of the day and night (almost got evicted). Under my supervision during the last twenty years, he has returned almost completely to us, and all without any medication. He has been productive, responsible and can hold down a job, and he pulls his weight around the place too, inquisitive (likes calculus), creative (likes painting) and has, over all, been happy and well adjusted for about the last eight years now. Here's one of his Paintings....
Thanks for the quick response, I hope you don't mind all the quoting but it helps me to organize my thoughts. Looking forward to your longer post later, no hurry though, I've got a bit of rushing around to do myself!
Take care for now, Emile
