hope this isnt too much of a stupid question

Hi everyone!

Ive been reading a terrific book "Wicca, a guide for the solitary practitioner" by Scott Cunningham. I was wondering, if when doing magik/ritual outside, say in your own backyard, do you need to cast a circle? Or can you simply do something basic like mark out the four directions of North, South, East and West? And if you do need a circle, does it need to be as strong outside? Am I asking a totally stupid question? Should the answer be really obvious to me and Im just missing it? Thats what I feel like lol! I think Ive been overloading my poor brain with information! Im so new to all this, all of the stuff I read seems to be jumbling up in my head!

Thanks heaps, big smiles, Lisa : )

Hi Lisa, Take a look at a

Hi Lisa, Take a look at a thread called "how big a circle" in the School - Lesson Discussion Forum.  Initially posted by Charlotte, and David really made a great post about our circles and sacred areas. It helped me looked at my intentions when casting a circle completely different.... although I will continue to cast a circle around me when outside that thread really broadened my understanding of it all.  I hope it makes sense to you.

Also, I think maybe because we are Inclusive Wiccans, that what your saying does make a lot of sense. Your still creating your sacred space and isn't that all that matters?

With Love, Butterfly Spirit!

PS... as the saying goes, no question is silly because some things we are able to absorb better than other things.

I actually find this to be a

I actually find this to be a really good question, and I bet you'll get many different answers. I would definetly cast a circle for several reasons:

1. When you cast a cirlce you create a sacred space, giving the circle a different energy level. It's like moving to a place "outside time" and for me this adds to the energy of my ritual.

2. Casting a circle keeps unwanted energetic influences out. Even if you're outside in nature (perhaps especially if you're outside in nature) you never know what energetic footprints are around you. Any stray energy might influence your ritual intention, so casting a circle just helps you avoid this.

3. Casting a circle helps keep your energy focused and concentrated untill you are ready to release it. This means none of your energy gets wasted, and it all gets used for your intended purpose.

I know there are some who think of a circle as only creating a sacred space and argue that as nature is sacred you don't need to create a sacred space when doing outdoor ritual. As stated above I believe there are still reasons why casting a circle outdoors is warrented.

Hope this helps.

In addition to the above

In addition to the above post, in casting a circle you also go through "the motions" more. IE you're not just calling corners. As such, you can fit in your introduction to the nature spirits around you, and then thank them for allowing you within their domain, at the end ;)
