Lending Library

Hi everyone,

Oak and Mistletoe has a lending library of books and Tarot decks and collected papers available for lending out just like a "real" library. If you are a registered student who has completed lesson 4, you are eligible to borrow a book or two for a month at a time. For distance students you will need to pay postage there and back of course but lending a book may help with studies. It may also be a way to preview a book before deciding to buy a copy for yourself.

I have pasted the catalogue below for you. If you'd like to borrow a book, please email me. I will send you a PayPal invoice for the postage and it will then wing it's way to you.

Can I just point out that books will be sent out on an honour system. We are expecting borrowers to return the book after a month. If they are not returned, your student registration may be cancelled and I will be very dissapointed. I may even get annoyed and you might not like me when I'm annoyed. :)

Smiles,

Amethyst

Hi

I am looking throough your library and would like to read ~    Solitary Wicca for Life: A Complete Guide to Mastering the Craft on Your Own by  von Arin Murphy-Hiscock

I found this one for the teenager ~

SOLITARY WITCH: The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation

Author: Silver RavenWolf

http://www.esotericbookshop.com.au/new/catalogue/books/product.php/16/34/1103

Has anyone read this book? I was thinking about getting this one for my daugther. You can say her first book to help her on her path.

Silver Ravenwolf seems to

Silver Ravenwolf seems to have a very bad reputation in the wider Wiccan community, Lady Shadows. I'm not sure what the issue is, having never read any of their books myself, but it might be worth investigating those concerns before you part with money.

Correct

Yes indeed Alistair. One of the criticisms of Silver Ravenwolf is that she alledgedly plagarised much of her work without giving credit to the origonal authors.

The library is open and free (although we ask you to pay postage there and back) for students who are on lesson 5 or above.

She is often accused by folks

She is often accused by folks of being very pop-Wicca with not a tremendous amount of depth.  Almost as if she's attempting to create Hollywood witchcraft in the real world, focusing almost entirely on spell work to the near absence of core beliefs and fundamentals.  It's also often noted that she advocates the concept of Wicca as whatever you want it to be, essentially make it up as you go along.  Some of that comes down to folks with narrower definitions of Wicca, whom I think many here would disagree with to varying extents.  But having read two of her books (To Ride a Silver Broomstick and To Stir a Magick Cauldron), I'd have to largely agree with the sentiment.  I think she takes Wicca as a flexible practice and belief to such an extreme that there is very little left that other Wiccans would recognize as Wicca.  Further, it's so wide open that a newcomer that could really use some guidance doesn't really get much.

I think perhaps the more aggregious claims against her are that she encourages teens to lie or hide their beliefs from their parents and is rather judgmental and even perhaps a bit prejudiced against Christianity.  Again, some of that may be sour grapes and nitpicking, but there's some measure of truth in it from the works I've read.

In the end, I'm not on the SRW bashing bandwagon.  And I certainly can't speak to her more recent books.  But honestly, I'd recommend against her work if for no other reason than there are a good number of Wiccan resources that are more effective, more accurate, and more helpful, at least in my experience.  And many other resources avoid the ethical gray area that she sometimes finds herself in.  The two books of hers I once owned were my primary resources on paganism for my first few years.  I think they really did me a disservice that I could have avoided by reading other authors.

That said, I'm new to O&M, and can't speak for anyone else here.  If I've overstepped, by all means let me know.

A lending library, splendid

A lending library, splendid idea!

For Canadians wanting to take advantage of this service, it's about $32 one way by air to Australia, or about $25 via slow boat mail, but you can send up to a cubic foot parcel at that rate, if it's not too heavy.  I don't know if that accords with Australia's overseas rates, or with Amethyst's lending policy.

It occurs to me that it would be more cost-effective to take a chance with an Amazon order and the Super-Saver shipping rate, or to start up a North American branch of the lending library.  I'm putting forth that idea as a positive suggestion, not as a gripe.  What do people think?
