March 2010 competition and prize

Well the competition is back again and this time we say a huge thank you to Seraphimia who has created this stunning journal as the prize. Thankyou Seraphimia for donating such a beautiful gift for folks.

So what do you need to do to be in the running to win this time?

I'd like you to think about the difference in definitions between words “wisdom” and “knowledge”. As you think through the meaning of these words, particularly in a spiritual sense, I’d like you to ponder and answer these questions.

What is the difference and similarity between the meanings of “wisdom” and “knowledge” and how do these words fit into spirituality? Where does “wisdom” come from and where does “knowledge” come from?

The competition is open to registered students only (sorry to those who are forum members only but this is one of the benefits for those registered to study Inclusive Wicca) and you must get your entry in by the end of March by posting your answer to the thread here.

We will be having a guest judge again so keep your eyes peeled for who that might be this time!

Please join me in thanking Seraphimia for crafting and donating such a beautiful journal as the prize and happy posting folks.

Wow, that is stunning!

Wow, that is stunning! Absolutely gorgeous. Really going to have to try and get my brain into gear and attempt to articulate!

What is the difference and similarity between the meanings of “wisdom” and “knowledge” and how do these words fit into spirituality? Where does “wisdom” come from and where does “knowledge” come from?

The similarity between wisdom and knowledge is that you have information from lessons or experience about a certain subject or situation. There is a certain amount of overlap between them. The difference I suppose is insight. We learn a lot in Wicca and although we get told and learn for ourselves things about the Rede, ritual, spells, practices etc, it is insight that takes us below that surface level. For example, we get given the Rede to look over and live by and we can learn it off by heart - that is adding to our knowledge. But when we look at the symbolism, the deeper meanings of the words and realise the applicability and actually apply to our lives, that is wisdom.

I also see wisdom as more general and more about the self and the way we deal with difficult situations or times in our lives. As spirituality is so much a part of our lives, it's the living that is the wisdom of life. So, if someone is making your life a complete misery and going out of their way to do it, the wisdom that comes from that situation is your attitude towards it - deflecting their negativity, in a non harmful way when you would before let rip at them and tell them what a cretin they are. I have not yet perfected applying this knowledge - it remains in my head, so I suppose this is better but true wisdom is trusting in the Divine and knowing that karma is coming to them, regardless of my own actions - without wanting to retaliate anyway!

Wisdom and knowledge both come from learning and experience. For me, wisdom comes as a slow realisation, that thought process that creeps up on you, resulting in that, 'oooh, I see!' moment. I suppose it's the difference between an intellectual knowing and a knowing in your heart. It's like knowing intellectually that there is the Source - the entity that created the Lord and Lady and knowing in your heart. Or the interconnectedness between everything -  that we are all from the same source. Wisdom is so hard to try and articulate, it's intangible. Although you can share what wisdom you gain, I don't think the other person claims it as wisdom until they fully embrace it. I will have a think on this one and maybe come back if I can focus my thoughts in any more!

Something much more simple

Something much more simple that occured to me in a lecture...Wisdom is knowing when to apply the knowledge that you have gained. So, with a wiccan example, it is knowing how to do a spell to promote love but the wisdom is knowing when to do so.

'Aim for the moon, even if you miss, you'll still land amongst the stars.'

Two sides of the same coin

I am not entering for obvious reasons :) but would still like to contribute anyway.

Anyone can have knowledge, they can pick up a book and read it thus have a new found knowledge, but to have wisdom takes something else and is less tangible. It's accumlative in the way that knowledge is, but it can't be gained by knowledge alone, although knowledge pays it's part.

Wisdom is comprehension of what is true or right coupled with optimum judgment as to action. Synonyms include: sagacity, discernment, or insight. Wisdom often requires control of one's emotional reactions (the "passions") so that one's principles, reason and knowledge prevail to determine one's actions.

An example of knowledge without wisdom (in a very simplified example) would be to have knowledge, but not the skill. Anyone can pick up a book on a subject it does not equal they then know how to be a plumber for example.

Wisdom comes with both experience and the subsquent use of that experience and it's affects over your world view and, how you interact with others and how others perceive you to be wise.

These two are very much two sides of the same coin since they compliment each other, however alone one does not equal the other.

Thank you

Seraphina what a beautiful journal. Thank you for donating it to O&M for this comp. .

This will not be my final answer, but it is the first thing that popped into my head.

Wisdom is what you gain from Knowledge.

I can't wait to elaborate on this subject. It is going to be so interesting to read everyone's thoughts on these words.

knowledge vs wisdom

Merry Meet,

Dear Amethyst you don't make it easy. WOW what a comparison. Well I'll give it a try, here goes:

Knowledge is but the messenger that calls you to wisdom, but it is not wisdom.  One can gain knowledge, but one does not seek wisdom - one meets it when one often least expects it and recognizes it as kindred.  Knowledge puts us in the way of wisdom, but wisdom is experiential; it is a truth one recognizes in the external world that already resides in the internal one.  One cannot *learn* wisdom - one must awaken it.  Knowledge gives you the tools but never mistake the tools for the treasure.  I find that most religions preach the tools and talk wisdom to death trying to reduce it for swift and easy consumption. Shun this habit.  Kahlil Gibran said that height and depth are nearer to each other than the mid ground.  Do not be mislead - there are no fast-food outlets for wisdom.  Simplicity is best understood as we find the endless connections in complexity.  Simplicity cannot be found in one prophet, one book, one religion or one school of study.  It is found in all of life by learning from everything - people, books, experiences, pain and pleasure, this age and ages past.

Wicca wisdom would have us stand tall before the gods in recognition that we are vessels of their blessings.  We are vessels of their gifts and the gift of life they bestow on us.  Wicca wisdom would have us fully experience the greatness that lies within us and asks us to awaken that greatness as a tribute to the gods.

Knowledge is intellectual - wisdom is divine.  The more you seek knowledge (all knowledge) the more wisdom you will experience.  Knowledge and wisdom use two completely different organs to communicate to you.  One is known, the other felt.  The divine speaks to us through the spirit, not the mind.  Knowledge is only the doorway to wisdom.

When wisdom is revealed to you - it does not explain itself - it reveals itself full blown, like manna from heaven on a silver platter.  It awakens within as an all encompassing flood of warm illumination or like a bolt of lightning that shocks or stuns you.  This is why the sages call it enlightenment.  Wisdom does not need digesting, deliberating, debating or dissecting by doubt or reason.  It breathes within you as calm surety and perfect peace.  It is then that you recognize intellectually that this knowledge has always been with you, just waiting for you find it.  From head to toe, you have everything you need to become extraordinary.

There is wisdom in Nature and knowledge in Scholarship.  Nature teaches us what works and what doesn't work.  Knowledge teaches us how to use our senses, how to observe nature, how to evaluate it, how to record life lessons, and how others before us did the same.  We first learn wisdom in life by experience, (usually painful experience) and then as we grow, we recognize wisdom in life by example.  Through knowledge and wisdom, we eliminate fear, which produces understanding.  We begin to understand who we are and why we are here.  We recognize with generosity, others stumbling while seeking their way, and develop a keen awareness and love for the miracle that is all Life - and that includes oneself.

There is no spell to achieve this.  Wisdom is a life long experience.  You must seek knowledge to awaken wisdom.  The more we know, the more we realize how much we don't know.  The wiser we grow, the more wisdom we sense is yet to be discovered.  With each step, we grow larger in each other´s sight, we grow larger in the sight of the gods, and it follows, the gods grow larger within us.  Experiencing this knowledge, we find true humility and peace from the inside out.

' Knowledge' is information of which someone is aware. Knowledge is also used to mean the confident understanding of a subject, potentially with the ability to use it for a specific purpose

'Wisdom' is the ability to make correct judgments and decisions. It is an intangible quality gained presumably through    experience .

Well that is a disjointed try.

Thank you Seraphimia for your wonderful donation it is a beautiful creation, the talent in O & M just blows me away on a daily basis.

Take Care

Blessed Be

Wow Seraphimia, what an

Wow Seraphimia, what an absolutely gorgeous gift you have donated. You are very generous.

I love the question too Amethyst. I have a very clear idea in my mind of the difference between wisdom and knowledge, so I hope I can describe it eloquently.

What is the difference and similarity between the meanings of “wisdom” and “knowledge” and how do these words fit into spirituality? Where does “wisdom” come from and where does “knowledge” come from?

To me wisdom is the application of knowledge. Knowledge is the sum of what you have learned, be that from books, a teacher or any other source around you. It is a theoretical understanding of principles, how things work and what to do. Wisdom on the other hand, is the application of this knowledge. It is the actual doing and putting into action of the knowledge you have obtained.

Taking spirituality in general, and wicca in particular, as an example knowledge would be the schematic understanding of i.e. the Sabbats and how they are performed, where as wisdom would be the learning one obtains from actually celebrating and partaking in these sabbats.

Wisdom is knowledge filtered through experience. Being knowledgeable and being wise is not the same, and to me it is more important to be wise than knowledgeable. Generally I would way that knowledge comes from studying and wisdom comes from living. It often seems that people with a lot of knowledge lack wisdom. They seem to focus all their energy on obtaining more theoretical learning, yet they never apply this learning to life and thus they gain no wisdom.

The knowledgeable person is the one who sits in the dusty library day out and day in reading about great adventures. The wise person is the one who is out in the world gaining experiences. He has experienced pain, joy, sadness, happiness, friendship, divinity, loss of faith and everything else that is out in the world.

I think it's like trying to explain color to someone who was born blind. You can tell them what it is and how you see the world, but they will never understand what green is because they cannot experience it for themselves.

Brightest blessings, Michelle (formerly Gwennie) http://aspiralpath.wordpress.com/

Wisdom & Knowledge

I believe Wisdom is a very ancient gift that we become a part of as we gain knowledge and how we use our knowledge gained. Knowledge comes from learning, reading, listening. The gift of wisdom comes from the collective consciousness, nature, the universe....the Divine. Wisdom is essentially using the knowledge and experiencing, visualising, believing. It's not something that is just handed to us, it comes to us through knowledge. Knowledge is the substance that wisdom operates with. How you use your knowledge with everything else you know determines whether it strengthens or weakens your wisdom.

* Thank you Seraphimia for donating such a gorgeous prize.....Someone will truly love and cherish such a beautiful piece of work. You have an incredible talent (I can only imagine what your Book of Shadows looks like! <3)

My daughter ( 12 yrs)  thinks

My daughter ( 12 yrs)  thinks that wisdom is to know things about the world from a faith or belief system and knowledge is to know things on and academic  level.. Which is pretty much what i was thinking as well.. Great minds think alike...

So to give an example from the topic inclusive wicca .  wicca is the belief system, you know things about wicca such as the exsistence of the divine. The way the mind can connect to the spirit. This is often learnt in more detail as you experience more through practice.  This knowing is wisdom from the heart . Witchcraft is the tool set  of wicca. The knowledge of the  elements, the hebs, the process of circle casting etc . This knowing is the Knowldge of the head. I  believe that one can be very wise and  not have very much knowldge but also that the reverse can also be true. So as a combined effort from my daughter and i this is OUR contribution.

As an aside not i did

As an aside note i did everything backwards today and posted OUR answer before reading eveyone else. This is somthing  i dont usually do and today wish i had not! I do not envy the person judging this comp. It appears we all have a very similar idea on what the differnces and similarities are here . Good luck eveyone.

Knowledge and Wisdom

Some great answers and very hard to compete with, but I will post my thoughts anyway.

1.             The difference in definitions between words “wisdom” and “knowledge”:

Knowledge is acquired through the learning process.  Wisdom is the ability to apply this knowledge through experience, without having to think about what you are doing.  Knowledge is the tool that leads you to wisdom, but knowledge is not wisdom. You can gain knowledge, not wisdom. Knowledge puts us in the way of wisdom. Wisdom is present in you and knowledge helps you to discover it.

2.             How do these words fit into spirituality?

Knowledge:         Learning about spirituality from teachers, books etc.

Wisdom:                Using that knowledge of how to connect with the Divine and by practicing that connection.  By doing this I am connecting to the source of spiritual wisdom.   When I connect to this inner source, I am connecting with the vibrations of ancient memories (stored in what some call Akasha) and spiritual wisdom.  The knowledge already exists inside us.  One cannot learn wisdom , one must awaken it.

As Kahlil Gibran wrote:

AND a man said, Speak to us of Self-Knowledge.
And he answered, saying:

Your hearts know in silence the secrets
of the days and the nights.
But your ears thirst for the sound of
your heart's knowledge.
You would know in words that which
you have always know in thought.
You would touch with your fingers the
naked body of your dreams.
And it is well you should.
The hidden well-spring of your soul must
needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;
And the treasure of your infinite depths
would be revealed to your eyes.
But let there be no scales to weigh your
unknown treasure;
And seek not the depths of your knowledge

 with staff or sounding line.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless.
Say not, "I have found the truth," but
rather, "I have found a truth."
Say not, "I have found the path of the soul."
Say rather, "I have met the soul walking
upon my path."
For the soul walks upon all paths.
The soul walks not upon a line, neither
does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of
countless petals

wisdom and knowledge

Hi everyone!

My answer is very short- Wisdom is what Knowledge becomes, once matured over time.

Big smiles, Lisa : )

generosity

your generosity is wonderful and as everyone will say..... thank you.  It is lovely. xxx

I Believe that:

"Wisdom is a reflection of the Soul".

Knowledge is what we all (most/some) seek and will eventually aquire.

Spiritually, people will seek knowledge to one day aquire wisdom.

I personally think there is quite a difference between the two.

Good Luck to everyone in the Comp.  It is an extraordinarily beautiful book.

nice

Okay, I was meditating last night and this is what came to my mind. Knowledge is knowing things or learning things on a scholastic level. Anyone can gain knowledge if they chose to by asking questions or reading books, and so on. For instance, when I wanted to learn about wicca I looked it up on the internet read about it, and found this site in which I am learning and gaining knowledge. (lucky me, how fun). Thanks Amethyst! I had to give her a shout our for sharing her knowledge with me. One thing that I can't get from this school is wisdom. That I have to find on my own, and that comes with learning about my self. Obviously I can't read that in a book, or question anyone about what spirituality means to me.

In part taking my knowledge and adhering it to myself, and taking that knowledge twisting it around in a way that makes sense to me is important.

Taking knowledge and having it transform into actions is the start of wisdom. Sometimes it takes mistakes to be wise. For instance; I "know" why I made the mistake. Wisdom comes in when I learn from that mistake, and not make it again.

This fits into my transformation of spirituality, because I can read about it all I want, but will truly not understand it until I feel it. You can't read that in a book either; especially because it is different for everyone. My wisdom is not yours. Your wisdom is not mine. We can share knowledge but not wisdom.

And the winner is...

Well this competition, like all of them was very hard to judge. Seraphimia was our guest judge (thanks honey) and also was the wonderful person who made and donated the prize for this comp (thanks again honey).

Seraphimia tells me that it was very difficult to come up with a winner and she had to consider carefully the winner from the incredible entries. As usual, the posts were amazing (I certainly love reading and learning from them).

So without further ado, the winner is ... (drum roll please) ... Gwennie! She's away on hols at the moment but I will let her know and post off the stunningly beautiful journal to her which our artist extraordinaire Seraphimia made.

Well done everyone on a fantastic effort. Now I have to think about our next competition...

Wisdom and Knowledge !!!!

Greetings to all, I know the competition is over but I wanted to look this one up, and understand it for my self . Wisdom - is comprehension of what is true or right coupled with optimum judgment as to action. Wisdom often requires control of ones emotional reactions ( the passions ) so that ones principles , reason and knowledge prevail to determine one`s actions. Knowledge - expertise, and skills acquired by a person through experience or ones education, the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject, fact or information .I am also glad to be back . Have missed you all and your knowledge !!!!!!
