Naming Gods (Harry McAlister)

I see it a lot on web sites and in book stores.  The title of the article, book, or question is choosing my Gods.  The question is how do I select my Gods?  There are so many and I don't know about this one, or I think I might have Mayan roots with ten cc's of ancient Babylonian blood is there a cross over?  What if I want more than two?  What if I feel a close connection to one out of a fictional book?

A truly awesome thing about this path in Wicca is that it is open.  It is more important that you truly believe and have kinship with your Deities than to pick a name out of a book and say I am a worshipper of the left handed tree snake God; Peanut Butter and his Goddess Jelly.  Further it is kind of presumptuous to assume you get to choose anything relating to an all powerful Deity.  They have in fact already chosen you.

So how do you know their names?  How do I know who chose me?  There are six billion of us living on this planet, and if we assume that all of us are believers that is some six or more billion ideas of Deity.  Could it be that there is but one or two actual beings out there that we call Gods?  Yup.  In our all powerful divinely chosen guise as human beings we tend to forget who we are in the universe.  We laugh at the little insignificant one cell organism under the microscope.  But you know, our planet when you stop to consider it by itself is so big we cannot fathom the energies involved in its day to day operations.  Think about swimming from one continent to the next across an ocean teaming with how many different species.  Go hiking in a forest and become lost and you will know instantly how big the earth is and how small we are.  Loose site of your child in a grocery store and you see right away the world is a very big place.  But it is just a fly spec in the galaxy.  Which is another fly spec in the universe AND THE GODS CREATED IT ALL!

The universe is a very big place and the Gods who created it so powerful we can not even begin to fathom.  Our pea brains cannot handle something that big.  So we name our Gods.  We put names and faces on that which is so awesome, so big, that if we didn't call them something, didn't put a shape to them it would simply overwhelm us.
So sit back, relax, quit stressing out.  Those same all powerful Gods don't stress over what you call them so long as you call them. They believe in you.  The name is a label we put on so we can understand something we can never understand.  So if you are Wiccan, Catholic, or Jewish we all worship the same creative forces that spawned the universe.  We are brothers and sisters all.

Don't choose out of a book.  Look at who you are.  Write down in your journal what you believe.  Meditate and THINK on your principles and values.  Keep your faith strong and know what that faith is in your heart  Open your heart and mind to them.  Then one day, when you least expect it, names, shapes, Gods will come to you.  They will show themselves to you, and you will suddenly go I knew that, because they have been there all along.  The universe didn't fall off a turnip truck yesterday; it's been here a very long time.
