Wiccan Magick Meets “The Secret”
I’ve been reading “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne and as I read through her pages it occurred to me that what Rhonda describes as the law of attraction is in fact the same as what we’d describe as magick. I’d agree with critics who may say that there are some things in an ethical, Wiccan magickal context that the practitioner wouldn’t seek to attract to themselves (that’s a whole other InfoCircle) but essentially the principles Rhonda espouses are extraordinarily similar to those Wiccans would argue are magick.
The Secret suggests that ‘like attracts like’ and that whatever it is you actively seek and believe will come to you, does in fact materialise (good and bad). Even given the ethical constraints of sympathetic and attraction magick, I’d have to admit that this sounds remarkably similar to our own construct of attraction magick. I’d argue that in conducting spell-work to attract things to ourselves such as happiness, money, health, a new home or whatever it may be, we put in place the forces of natural energy that bring about our desired result. While we may use additional items in that spell work such as candles, oils, herbs, poppets or whatever that Rhonda doesn’t include, essentially we’re using our minds to instruct and direct universal energy so that it develops into our chosen outcome exactly as she describes.
That lead me to think about what other authors have also said about creating your own desired future. There are several famous authors and motivational speakers such as Zig Ziglar, Anthony Robbins, Robert Kiyosaki and so on who have shouted long and hard to the world that each person is the sole creator and architect of their own lives. While they may use different labels for their approach (Anthony Robbins uses NLP for instance), they’re pretty much all saying the same as many Wiccans say. You are your life’s architect. What’s more, you’re also responsible for the outcome. So if you’re life is one you’re happy with, that’s to your credit. If your life is not what you wanted, that’s something you have to look at and openly explore how you got where you are.
The Law of Return clearly says that we get back what we put out and if we take a look at that construct from the inside, then that also means that whatever we thought about ourselves, whatever we decided with our self talk was who we are, then that’s exactly who we are. Each one of us has an idea in our heads about who we are, what attributes and issues we have and where we want to be. The challenge is threefold. The first is to make that view of ourselves the very best it can be, the second is to make it so and the third is to know we’re responsible for our own life outcomes as a result.
Happy life designing!
